Evaluating and Sustaining Change Essay Discussion Paper

Post a brief comparison between change management and change leadership.

Change management and change leadership are two different concepts applied in facilitating change, and are not interchangeable. In this case, change management refers to the set of mechanisms, structures and tools applied in controlling the change efforts. It is reactionary, appearing as a linear process that preset checkpoints towards a singular goal. It can be perceived as an intermittent project that has a discrete start and finish, even as it addresses the singular goal. It pursues the general objective of minimizing the impacts and distractions of the change by designing a change process that keeps the changes within a controllable level, and pre-empting or addressing problems that may arise, such as rising costs and resistance from personnel. As such, it can be perceived as a way of controlling the change (Murray, 2022)Evaluating and Sustaining Change Essay Discussion Paper.

On other hand, change leadership refers to the driving processes, visions and forces that fuel the transformation. It is associated with giving the change process energy and direction, and making the change more efficient, smarter and faster through taking on a resource-centric approach. It is more about ensuring that resources are allocated to the right places and the persons involved are empowered.it can be perceived as a proactive process effort towards improvement and growth, while creating an inspiring vision and advocating for that vision throughout the whole organization (Murray, 2022). Although change management and change leadership have significant differences, the two are closely linked. Change management is an iterative process that requires change leadership to correct the change direction throughout the whole process and manage inputs (Marshall & Broome, 2017)Evaluating and Sustaining Change Essay Discussion Paper.

Explain how leadership approaches may relate to processes for evaluation of and sustainment of change in a healthcare organization or nursing practice.

Leadership takes on a lot of pressure, especially from the stakeholders’ expectations, during the change process. In fact, the stakeholders expect that the leadership would provide accountability, connection and clarity during the change process. Leadership ensures that the right change management mentality is adopted. This requires a balance between time and resource allocations from the perspective of change initiative versus the financial implications (Murray, 2022) Evaluating and Sustaining Change Essay Discussion Paper.

In addition, it ensures that the change gains the necessary support, especially in a consensus driven culture. While leadership might manage these aspects of change through trial-and-error, evaluation ensures that these aspects are measured for success (Stanley, 2017). Besides that, effective leadership ensures that the change is managed effectively in terms of clarifying the vision and communicating effectively, staying connected with the persons involved, and being accountable and transparent. This helps the leadership in determining that what is thought of as being done effectively and what is actually being achieved are two different things. For instance, if leadership assigns staff to implement a hygiene change within the hospital, that does not necessarily mean that the hygiene change would occur with the intended goals. Evaluation helps in determining if the targeted goals are achieved, or if additional changes should be made (Finkelman, 2019) Evaluating and Sustaining Change Essay Discussion Paper.

Explain the function of leadership in evaluating, maintaining, and sustaining change. What is the influence of leadership on these aims?

Leadership has six main functions in evaluating, maintaining and sustaining change. First, sponsoring change by acting as advocates for change in the organization, using political capital to ensure that change happens, and making certain that the change initiative does not halt from a lack of attention. Second, acting as role models who demonstrate the attitudes and behaviors expected of others. Leaders are consistently watched for their actions and words to see if they believe that the change should happen. The leaders must be deliberate and self-aware. Third, leadership makes decisions in terms of controlling resources, such as equipment, budgets and people. They have the authority to make the decisions that affect the change initiative, and can determine whether the change proceeds or stops. During the change, leadership act decisively in leveraging its decision-making authority in choosing the options that support the change (Garcia-Dia, 2019)Evaluating and Sustaining Change Essay Discussion Paper.

Fourth, leadership acts as the voice and face of the change. They consistently and transparently share information, keep people updated and offer encouragement. Even if different messages are presented, the one presented by the leadership is likely to receive the most attention. Fifth, leadership is engaging, providing motivation required. They create a sense of importance and urgency about the change, showing passion and commitment in getting things done. They empathetically and energetically understand the need for motivation. Sixth, leadership holds others accountable for the change. They uphold agreements and ensure that others do the same, removing the obstacles and ensuring that others do not interfere with the change. Leadership recognizes that change cannot happen unless they fulfil the six functions that require their authority (Garcia-Dia, 2019)Evaluating and Sustaining Change Essay Discussion Paper.
